PRP vs. Hair Transplant Surgery: How to Know Which Method Would be Best for You

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is one of the two components that is found in our blood with the other being red blood cells. The plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors. Growth factors are used to signal skin cells to function. Therefore, when injected into the scalp those growth factors can help stimulate the activity of the hair follicles, which then promotes new hair growth. PRP hair restoration treatments are shown to increase hair count, hair thickness and hair growth. Results can be accelerated when combined with ACell, a manufactured protein that is rich with naturally-occurring collagens and proteins. When used together, ACell provides and infrastructure for the PRP to “wake up” those shrinking follicles to produce fuller, thicker hair.
Who Is a Good Candidate for PRP Therapy?
PRP hair therapy is a great option for both men and women who are experiencing hair loss. This treatment works well for patients who are in the early stages of hair loss or thinning. A series of 3 to 5 treatments are recommended, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. When combined with ACell, only one session is required. Although the results aren’t instant, the are typically quite incredible.
Hair Transplant Surgery
At UFP we offer a couple different hair transplant options; follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Most people refer to this method as the “strip method”. The FUT method is when a strip of hair is excised from the lower back of the head. The incision is closed and leaves a fine white line that is easily concealed once the healing process is complete.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
The FUE method involves our NeoGraft technology which extracts one follicle at a time from the back of the head that is then transplanted to bald or thinning areas of the scalp. This method is great for patients with a tighter scalp, who have previously had a few strip-method procedures, or who prefer not to have a linear scar on the back of the head.
Who Is a Good Candidate for hair transplant surgery?
Hair transplant surgery is for patients with thinning hair, a receding hairline or balding. Hair transplants are done on a wide age range of patients depending on their stage of hair loss but typically for patients 30 years and older. Some patients require more than one hair transplant session depending on how many grafts are needed to reach their desired goal and outcome.
Combining PRP With Hair Transplant Surgery
At UFP, platelet-rich plasma is included with all hair transplant surgery cases and injected at the time of surgery to promote growth and speed up the healing process. PRP injections can also be done repeatedly afterwards for quicker results and to thicken the transplanted hair follicles.
