Hair Transplant Surgery in Utah with Melissa R

Melissa R Facebook LIVE video of hair transplant surgery in Utah with Dr. Scott Thompson of Utah Facial Plastics.

Melissa has suffered with female pattern baldness for many years. She is excited for her hair transplant surgery, as recommended by Dr. Thompson, to fill in the bald and thinning areas of her scalp. Dr. Thompson also recommended finasteride, a medication that helps block the hormone that causes the follicles to shrink and eventually go dormant. Taking this medication will help her keep the hair she has prevent further hair loss. This medication should not be taken by patients who are in their reproductive phase of life as it can cause abnormalities.

Hair Transplant Surgery Process

A hair transplant surgery requires a team of experts to complete. The back of the scalp is numbed with lidocaine injections once everyone is set up and ready to begin. Dr. Thompson then excises a strip of scalp from the back of the head to obtain the grafts from. He then closes it up nicely so the line will eventually fade and be covered by her hair. The incision takes approximately one week to heal post surgery.

The grafts are cleaned up under a microscope and checked to make sure they are healthy for transplantation. They are then separated out based on how many hairs are in each follicle. The thinner strands are used for the front of the hairline and they get thicker as they move back.

Dr. Thompson, with the assistance of his technicians, then creates the recipient sites on the top of the head and frontal hairline to place the grafts in to. Every step is meticulously performed so patients should plan on up to 8 hours to complete surgery, depending on how many grafts are being placed.

The grafts are placed and a head wrap is put on the head, which can be removed after 24 hours. Patients then need to pour warm soapy water once a day for 7-10 days until the scabs (which form after 3-4 days) come up. The hair will typically fall out with the scabs but the follicles are still in place. They will start to grow approximately 3-5 months after surgery with full results manifesting around the one year mark.

Hair Transplant Surgery for Female Pattern Baldness

Utah Facial Plastics offers two different techniques for hair restoration. One is FUT, follicular unit transplantation or “strip-method”, which is removing a piece of the scalp from the back of the head to obtain the grafts from. The other option is FUE, follicular unit extraction or NeoGraft, which involves no cutting. An area in the back of the head is shaved and the grafts are extracted one by one in a checkered pattern.

While NeoGraft is less-invasive, most female patients opt for the strip-method, or FUT. With NeoGraft, the area that needs to be shaved is harder to cover with their hair versus a small incision that can easily be covered after that area of the scalp is removed and closed up. Plus, there is no waiting for hair to grow back. FUT is less expensive as well.

The results are the same so either way, patients can expect beautiful, natural hair growth. It’s best to consult with one of our UFP hair specialists to determine which option is best for you. Utah Facial Plastics also offer scalp micro-pigmentation for hair loss. Call (801)776-2220 for a consultation or contact us HERE.
