By the young age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience hair loss and by the age of 50, 85% of men experience significant thinning. With so many men being affected by hair loss transplant surgery has become much more common than ever. Year after year we have seen the number of hair transplant cases rise and project that growth will continue in 2021.
The two most popular hair transplant surgery techniques are follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). Both techniques are capable of delivering excellent results with low risk of complications.
The FUT method is more commonly known as the “strip method”. This method requires that a strip of hair from the back of the patient’s scalp be excised, which is where the donor hair follicles will come from. This technique does leave the patient with a thin linear scar on the back of the scalp but it’s easily concealed once healed, especially if the individual wears their hair long.
The FUE method is much less invasive when compared to the FUT method. This technique does not require any incisions. Instead, the hair follicles on the back of the scalp are extracted directly one by one.
Both the FUT and FUE methods involve taking hair follicles from the back of the scalp because that area of the scalp has the strongest hair growth that are most resistant to balding.
FUE is not completely different from the FUT method. During either procedure the follicular units are being extracted and transplanted to the thinning or balding areas of the scalp. The major difference between the two methods is how the grafts are obtained. The FUE method does cost more because of the extra time it takes as well as the NeoGraft technology that we use with FUE cases.
Hair transplant surgery is the perfect option for most men and women who are experiencing thinning and/or balding. Both methods are minimally invasive and require very little to no down time. After 12-15 months, full results are apparent and are extremely natural.
Both methods offer patients fuller, thicker hair with long lasting results and little to no downtime which makes hair transplant surgery more common every year.
