What Is FUT or Strip Method Hair Transplants?
Follicular Unit Transplant surgery (FUT or strip method) is a time-tested hair transplant technique for permanent hair restoration in SLC, Utah. Drs. Thompson, Henstrom and Manning board-certified facial plastic surgeons, use your own hair to restore thick, healthy hair to balding areas and can recreate your natural hairlines with the most natural results.
The FUT hair transplant strip method involves taking the transplantation of tiny follicular units of hair that are extracted from areas of strong hair growth that are more resistant to balding – typically the back and sides of the scalp – which are then implanted to thinning or bald areas of the head. UFP specialists extensive experience with hair restoration techniques, medical expertise, and attention to detail produce incredibly natural results for patients concerned with hair loss with strip method hair transplants.
In comparison to older, traditional methods, UFP surgeons are able to achieve successful outcomes by dissecting the harvested hair into very small sections, called follicular units, and artistically placing them in tiny grafts that are virtually undetectable. These results are in complete contrast to those of hair “plugs” from hair transplant surgery years ago. Learn more about FUT vs. FUE.

How Is FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) Performed
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant is a surgical procedure where a strip of scalp is removed from the donor area, typically at the back or sides of the scalp. The strip is then divided into small grafts, each containing one to four hair follicles. These grafts are transplanted into the thinning or balding areas of the scalp in a way to provider natural results. The procedure leaves a linear scar in the donor area, which can be easily concealed with longer hair styles. FUT is known for providing a high number of grafts in a single session, making it ideal for those with extensive hair loss. FUT is a popular option, and when combined with our surgeons' expertise, it delivers natural-looking and exceptional results.

FUT FAQ's
For years it was thought that each hair grew as an individual strand but we know today that scalp hair actually grows in tiny groups of 1-4 hairs each. These grouping of hair are called “follicular units” and by using these units for hair restoration in Utah, the result is much more natural looking that previous methods of hair transplantation.
Advantages:
- Completely natural results
- Shorter procedure time compared to certain methods of FUE
- Healthy tissue to maximize follicular unit growth
- Typically less expensive than FUE
Disadvantages:
- Horizontal scar at donor area (typically can be covered by hair)
- Requires more healing time for donor site
- Not suitable for patients with “tight” scalps or those at risk of significant scarring
- Not suitable for patients who prefer very short hair
A good candidate for an FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant is typically someone with significant hair loss or thinning, especially in areas where the donor hair is abundant, such as the back or sides of the scalp. Ideal candidates are individuals who have realistic expectations and are in good overall health. FUT is often recommended for those with advanced hair loss who require a larger number of grafts in a single session. It’s also suitable for individuals with stable hair loss patterns, ensuring that transplanted hair will continue to thrive. Those with a flexible scalp and enough donor hair to harvest are also more likely to achieve the best results with this procedure.
Because every patient has a different set of goals and needs varying amounts of grafts for fullness, UFP Hair Restoration does not provide set costs for surgery without an evaluation. A full detailed quote is given during a consultation or through our Virtual Consultation page.
Following follicular unit transplantation, patients typically resume normal activities the next day with minimal restrictions. The donor area where the strip was removed will require about one week of care.
It is not uncommon for the hair to fall out with the new hair growth beginning around 4-5 months following surgery. You can expect fully mature hair growth in approximately one year from your procedure date, though it does vary with each patient.
The follicular unit transplantation method has been the standard in hair restoration since the early 1990’s. It continues to be a popular method for hair restoration throughout the world. In recent years, Follicular unit extraction (FUE) has become increasingly popular due to advancements in technology, such as Neograft. Drs. Thompson, Henstrom, and Manning have extensive experience with both techniques and will help you determine which method is best suited for you and your specific goals.
