What to expect with FUE in SLC, Utah

what-to-expect-with-fue-slcAt UFP Hair Restoration, we offer both the FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation) method for hair restoration. FUT involves removing a strip of scalp from the back of the head to obtain grafts from. FUE has become a more popular technique as each graft is removed one at a time leaving no linear scar on the back of the head. Here is what to expect with FUE in SLC, Utah.

Follicular Unit Extraction

An FUE procedure at UFP Hair Restoration involves the use of NeoGraft technology, an FDA approved follicular unit harvesting system. With this technique, hair follicles are removed individually from the thick donor area in the back of the head and transplanted to the thinning areas of concern.

First, the back of the scalp is injected with lidocaine to numb the area. Next, the patient lies face down while grafts are extracted by a skilled NeoGraft technician from the back of the head. Grafts are extracted in a checkered pattern so there is not visible thinning or bald spots in the back of the head.

Once all of the grafts have been extracted, each one is examined and prepared under a microscope for transplantation. All grafts are counted to ensure an exact amount. The price per graft ranges from $5-6 per graft depending on how many total grafts are transplanted in one session.

While the grafts are being prepared by a team of technicians, recipient sites on the top of the scalp are created by Dr. Thompson or Henstrom. These are tiny holes created with a small needle for the grafts to be inserted into. The recipient sites are created in a natural pattern as to avoid looking artificial. Each graft is then delicately placed into the recipient sites until completed. A pressure bandage is then placed on the scalp and removed after 24 hours. Those grafts will scab over and will fall out within 10-14 days. The hairs typically come out with the scabs but the follicles remain in place and begin producing hair within 3-5 months from surgery.
