Matthew Watts (known on social media platforms as Fleeting Films) is a filmmaker and online creator who has amassed more than 3.4 million subscribers on YouTube and 7.1 million followers on TikTok to date. Most known for his viral series ‘Discount Dentist’, Matt’s unique channel hosts medical, dental and ASMR themed content that is comedic in nature and effectively lures viewers in, one TikTok or YouTube Short at a time.
Step By Step Hair Transplant Surgery
When this “Discount Dentist” approached UFP with concerns of hair thinning (paired with an idea to document his own hair transplant journey) we were eager to connect him with our team of hair restoration specialists. After consulting with Dr. Scott Thompson who determined Matt was in fact a candidate for a hair transplant, a plan was made for the Fleeting Films creator to undergo an FUE (follicular unit extraction) transplant of approximately 1300 grafts.
Unlike with typical patients, each of Matt’s appointments were followed by a camera crew who captured the entirety of his experience, from the initial consultation to the procedure itself. As with all of our hair patients, Matt was instructed to eat a carb-heavy breakfast the morning of his procedure, given medication to help him relax during the procedure, fed the lunch of his choice and provided with all necessary post operative supplies to ensure the best results possible.
As with any hair case, Matt was completely numbed with local anesthesia before Dr. Thompson and our team of hair techs began the procedure. During this type of hair transplant (FUE), small needle-point incisions are made throughout the balding or thinning areas before follicles are harvested from the back of the head (or an area where more hair growth is present). These harvested follicles are then relocated to the areas of concern before beginning a new cycle of growth, filling in areas that had been thinning or balding prior to the procedure.
Patients are often concerned with the harvesting process and wonder if they will be left with new hair loss in the areas where follicles are harvested (the donor site). While it is true that grafts do not grow back after being extracted, individual hair follicles are heavily concentrated within the scalp and a special device is used to ensure that patients are left with an adequate number of grafts still in place, to avoid the appearance of any new hair loss.
Matt’s step by step hair transplant video (currently shared on the Utah Facial Plastics and Fleeting Films YouTube channel) is both educational and entertaining and captures the essence of what to expect when undergoing a hair transplant at Utah Facial Plastics. The “Discount Dentist” is currently about 3 months out from his transplant and is beginning to see new hair growth, as expected in any hair transplant case. He will continue to see progress over the next several months and can expect full results at the one-year mark.
