How is a Beard Transplant Performed?

Full, thick beards are very popular and desirable at this day in age and luckily, for those not blessed with full facial hair that would like to have a full beard, facial hair can be transplanted from the back of the head and the success rate is high. So how is a beard transplant performed?

There are two ways to obtain the grafts that are need for beard transplant surgery. The traditional method involves the FUT method which or removes a strip of scalp from the back of the head. The grafts of cleaned up and separated in preparation for transplantation. The second way involves removing each follicle one at a time from the back of the head. The results are great no matter which method is used but NeoGraft is easier to recovery from and there is no linear scar left on the back of the head. For patients who wear their hair long enough to cover that scare, this is typically not a problem. The main benefit of the strip-method is that it typically costs less so both options have pros and cons.

With NeoGraft, the back of the head is shaved so the follicles are easy to see and suction out in a checkered pattern. This is done after the area is fully name and the patient has taken Valium to help them relax. Those small holes in the back of the head easily heal in 3-5 days and will be undetectable to others.

The outline for where the grafts will go is designed by Dr. Thompson and the patient together prior to creating the recipient sites. Dr. Thompson then makes small holes in the appropriate direction for the grafts that are then placed until all the recipient sites are filled. Those grafts scab over within a few days and it takes approximately 7-10 days for the scabs to fully come off. Typically, the hair falls out with the grafts but the follicles are still in place and start producing hair approximately 3-5 months after surgery. Full results can be expected at the 9-12 month with a high success rate.

Expanding beyond the beard
Facial hair restoration isn’t limited to full beards. At UFP Hair Restoration we also perform mustache, goatee, sideburn, and scar restoration procedures. Whether you want a completely new style, to fill in patchy areas, or to restore hair growth where scarring has left thinning, modern transplant techniques can create a natural, lasting result.

Our approach: FUT vs. FUE
We offer both FUT (strip method) and FUE (NeoGraft) for beard restoration, depending on your hair type, goals, and donor area density.

  • FUT or Strip method: Often a better choice for patients who want maximum graft yield at a lower cost. A fine scar is left at the donor site, but it is usually well-hidden by surrounding hair.

  • FUE or NeoGraft: A less invasive option that avoids a linear scar and allows patients to keep shorter hairstyles. Tiny punch marks heal in just a few days.

During your consultation, we’ll determine the method that will give you the most natural density and balance between beard style, donor availability, and budget.
